Once a free entrance leisure spot for anyone to walk, with the popularity of all Gaudí related architecture, like the incomplete masterpiece Sagrada Familia, the flood of tourists had to be controlled. Now, booking tickets in advance to access the park is a must if you want to visit this famous spot of Barcelona. Here are the photos of my last visit, and you can check on my Youtube channel a short video about Park Güell.

Park Güell before
The origin purpose was very different of what it became to its present state of tourist spot. It was an assignment to Antoni Gaudí, by Eusebi Güell. The major plan was to develop an estate, building houses in the area. Imagine the views of the whole city of Barcelona and the sea from Park Güell, as if it was the first thing in the morning you see from the window of your room. The idea was bright, but the plan didn’t succeed. Even though few houses where built, and even Gaudí established his residence here, the lack of buyers, the difficult access to the area and the exclusivity of having a villa made the process hard for the investors and Gaudí. It wasn’t until 1963 that was established as municipal park of Barcelona, where locals and visitors have been visiting the Park Güell. In 1984 was declared UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Park Güell now
As mentioned at the beginning, the popularity of Gaudí related sites in Barcelona has suffered from its own great success. The flow of tourists became unsustainable, and life for local residents that enjoyed the park had enough of not being able to walk freely in their own neighbourhood. The regulation of tourist flow to the park has been an improvement for the local life. On the other hand, Barcelona residents have the right to enter freely the Park Güell area, by having the residence card of the city. The conservation of the Park and Heritage of Barcelona is one of the objectives of the entrance regulation. The official website has a great guide on how to prepare your visit. The opening hours vary every season and remember to book the tickets in advance.
