The convenience of being connected to our smartphones makes it easier for independent travelers to wander through a destination. The inconvenience is the need to be connected to the internet to use many of the apps. Sometimes we depend too much of the device and connection, and we forget how to do things the old way. Ask and interact with other humans. Here’s a list of apps I think might help you travel through Japan. All the apps are free to download for iOS and Android, some with in-app purchases.

1. The almighty apps

Travel Japan Wi-fi
The name of the new app gives a clear hint of what it’s used for. A wi-fi spot searcher for travelers in Japan. Solving one of the big complaints that for years I heard from tourists. It’s not that there was a bad wi-fi network, but that to connect to wi-fi services your phone needed to have a contract with one of the mobile phone companies from Japan. Lot of wi-fi, but travelers couldn’t really use it. In the recent years the problem has been solved clearly and this app will help you find all the open networks to connect. The app also features travel tips and navigation, plus the possibility to get discounts in several restaurants and shops. One of the most complete apps to travel to Japan.

Tabimori
Created in 2014, this app was an all-you-need for Japan, in one app. Currency converter, phrasebook, wi-fi searcher, weather forecast, list of embassies, navigation system, and even flight information. Anything a traveler might need during their journey through Japan.

2. Navigation
Navitime Japan
The Navitime group has many apps for travels and navigate through Japan, but the only one in english is the app for tourists. The free version is usefull for transfer and navigation with the railway networks, but limited in other aspects. The full version has a door to door feature and better options.

Hyperdia
This timetable and route searcher app has the most covered services for navigation in Japan. From station A to B, gives a whole guide of options and hours. The only problem, if you don’t really know the name of the place you’re going it’s complicated.

Google Maps
Not only to know the railway routes, but also to walk from door to door is one of the best apps. Also to keep your destination points and routes, to use offline afterwards.

3. Food
Gurunavi
Hungry and can’t decide which restaurant to try? this app will help. You can search by location, type of food, budget, solo or group, opening hours and so. Everything to decide where to eat. My favorite feature, search by discount or coupon places.
